Arginine Deiminase System Overview

The arginine deiminase system (ADS) is a metabolic pathway found in various bacteria, where it plays a crucial role in energy production, pH homeostasis, and adaptation to environmental stresses such as acidification. The system catabolizes L-arginine into citrulline and ammonia via arginine deiminase (ADI), ornithine carbamoyltransferase, and carbamate kinase. It generates ATP from ADP during anaerobic conditions and neutralizes acidic environments. ADS is considered a potential antimicrobial/antiparasitic drug target because it is absent in higher eukaryotes.
