Argininosuccinate synthetase 1 pseudogene 14 is one of at least fourteen pseudogenes derived from the functional argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1) gene, which encodes a key enzyme in the urea cycle responsible for the biosynthesis of arginine. Unlike the canonical enzyme, ASS1P14 does not encode a functional protein and is not involved in arginine biosynthesis, urea cycle, or any known biological pathway. Pseudogenes such as ASS1P14 are considered genetically inactive remnants, sharing high sequence homology with the expressed ASS1 gene but lacking coding potential due to sequence mutations, loss of introns, and/or premature stop codons. The only functional argininosuccinate synthetase 1 enzyme in humans is encoded by the ASS1 gene on chromosome 9. ASS1P14 does not act as an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or therapeutic drug target. There is no evidence linking ASS1P14 to biological functions, disease roles, drug interactions, biomarker utility, or safety concerns. The existence of ASS1P14 results from gene duplication and retrotransposition events during evolution.
