Argininosuccinate synthetase 1 pseudogene 8 (ASS1P8) is one of several pseudogenes related to the ASS1 gene. Unlike the functional gene, which encodes the argininosuccinate synthase 1 enzyme responsible for the third step of the urea cycle (combining citrulline and aspartate to form argininosuccinate), ASS1P8 is non-functional and does not produce any active enzyme. There are 10–14 copies of ASS1-related sequences in the human genome, but only the functional gene located on chromosome 9 encodes an active enzyme[4][1][2][3]. Pseudogenes like ASS1P8 generally do not have known clinical or pharmacological significance.
