Overview

ARHGAP42 antisense RNA 1 (ARHGAP42-AS1) is a long non-coding antisense RNA transcribed from the opposite strand of the ARHGAP42 locus on human chromosome 11. As an antisense RNA, ARHGAP42-AS1 is likely involved in the regulation of its sense gene ARHGAP42, which encodes a Rho GTPase-activating protein important for vascular tone and cell migration. Antisense RNAs, including ARHGAP42-AS1, function primarily as regulators of gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels, often by affecting chromatin states, transcription initiation/elongation, or stability of sense transcripts. Although antisense RNAs are increasingly recognized as relevant to disease pathogenesis, and ARHGAP42-AS1 may have a role in cancer biology through regulation of ARHGAP42 (for example, influencing cell migration and metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma), there is currently no evidence that ARHGAP42-AS1 itself is a directly druggable therapeutic target or that drugs have been developed to target this lncRNA.
