Overview

ARHGEF2 antisense RNA 1 (ARHGEF2-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA transcribed from the ARHGEF2 locus in antisense orientation. Like other antisense RNAs, it may regulate the expression of its sense gene, ARHGEF2, or other nearby genes through cis or trans mechanisms. Antisense RNAs can interfere with transcriptional machinery, modulate chromatin structure, and alter epigenetic status, impacting gene expression at multiple levels. Most functional data on antisense RNAs derive from studies indicating they play roles in cancer, development, and immune regulation, but there is little specific published information about the exact biological and disease functions of ARHGEF2-AS1. ARHGEF2-AS1 is a noncoding RNA and not the Rho/Rac guanine nucleotide exchange factor 2 protein (ARHGEF2), which is an enzyme involved in Rho GTPase activation, innate immunity, and cancer and is considered a therapeutic protein target. While ARHGEF2-AS1 may regulate ARHGEF2, it is distinct from the protein-coding gene and its protein product.
