Overview

Armadillo repeat-containing X-linked protein 3 (ARMCX3) is a mitochondrial outer membrane protein within the ARMCX gene family, distinguished by armadillo repeat domains. It is highly expressed in the central nervous system and plays roles in mitochondrial aggregation, transport, and localization, especially in neurons[1][3][4]. ARMCX3 can shuttle between mitochondria, cytoplasm, and nucleus due to unique targeting and localization signals[2]. In neurons, ARMCX3 interacts with transport complexes such as TRAK2-kinesin and modulates mitochondrial trafficking along microtubules[3][4]. Through its interaction with the transcription factor Sox10, ARMCX3 can enhance transcriptional activation of downstream neuronal genes and may participate in signaling between mitochondria and the nucleus[1]. Additionally, ARMCX3 promotes neuronal differentiation by driving progenitor cells to exit the cell cycle, and has potential implications in tumor suppression and cancer[3][4]. There are currently no reported drugs or biomarkers directly targeting ARMCX3, nor established therapeutic or diagnostic applications.
