Aromatase

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Cytochrome P450 superfamily, Monooxygenase
01

Overview

Aromatase, encoded by the CYP19A1 gene, is a key enzyme in estrogen biosynthesis, converting androgens like testosterone and androstenedione into estrogens such as estradiol and estrone. It plays a critical role in sexual development, reproductive function, and is a therapeutic target in hormone-dependent cancers, particularly breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors are used to block estrogen synthesis, but their use can have systemic effects, including cardiovascular risks.
