The arterial lumen of tumor-feeding vessels refers to the internal space of the arteries that provide the primary blood supply, oxygen, and nutrients to a malignant tumor. In clinical practice, this anatomical site is not a molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, but rather a physical target for interventional oncology procedures such as transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) [PMID: 11830197]. By navigating microcatheters into these lumens, clinicians can deliver high doses of chemotherapy or radioactive isotopes directly to the tumor while minimizing systemic toxicity [PMID: 27034148]. This approach is particularly effective for hypervascular tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, which derive the majority of their blood supply from the hepatic artery rather than the portal vein [PMID: 21544803]. The therapeutic goal is to induce tumor necrosis through a combination of localized cytotoxic insult and ischemia caused by the physical blockage of the lumen with embolic materials. Consequently, the lumen acts as a critical gateway for locoregional therapy rather than a biological trigger for signal transduction.
The arterial lumen serves as a conduit for the direct delivery of cytotoxic drugs or embolic agents via catheterization to induce high local drug concentrations and tumor ischemia.
