The articular branch of the obturator nerve consists of small nerve fibers branching from both the anterior and posterior divisions of the obturator nerve as they pass through the thigh.[1][4][5][8] These branches enter the capsules of the hip and knee joints, providing sensory innervation to these joint structures. While not a classic molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, these nerve branches can be therapeutically targeted for pain management, such as through nerve blocks performed in orthopedic or urological procedures. Damage or entrapment of the obturator nerve or its articular branches can contribute to chronic joint pain and impaired mobility, particularly following trauma or surgery. However, the articular branch itself is not a discrete molecular entity like a receptor and is instead an anatomical subdivision of a peripheral nerve, so it is not conventionally cataloged as a drug target in pharmacology[1][4][6][8].
Nerve block—local anesthetics inhibit conduction in the articular branch, preventing transmission of sensory (pain) signals from the joint area[4][6]
