The articular branches of the obturator and femoral nerves are the primary sensory pathways providing nociceptive innervation to the hip joint capsule (Short et al., British Journal of Anaesthesia, 2014). The femoral nerve typically supplies the anterior and anterolateral aspects of the capsule, while the obturator nerve supplies the anterior and anteromedial portions (StatPearls, 2023). These nerves are critical clinical targets in regional anesthesia and pain management, particularly for patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty or those suffering from chronic hip pain due to osteoarthritis (Girón-Arango et al., Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, 2018). Interventions such as the Pericapsular Nerve Group (PENG) block or radiofrequency ablation specifically target these branches to provide effective analgesia while minimizing motor blockade of the parent nerve trunks (PubMed, 2021). By inhibiting the transmission of pain signals from the hip joint to the central nervous system, targeting these nerves helps reduce perioperative opioid consumption and facilitates early mobilization (NIH, 2022). Pharmacological interaction with these nerves is primarily achieved through the administration of local anesthetics, which block voltage-gated sodium channels to prevent action potential propagation.
