Articular Cartilage

Molecular classification
Extracellular matrix, Connective tissue
01

Overview

Articular cartilage is a specialized hyaline cartilage that covers the surfaces of bones in synovial joints. It provides a smooth, low-friction surface for joint movement and acts as a shock absorber, protecting the underlying bone from damage. Its unique composition, including type II collagen and aggrecan, contributes to its load-bearing and compressive properties. However, articular cartilage is avascular, aneural, and alymphatic, resulting in limited regenerative capacity and susceptibility to degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis.
