Overview

Cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) is the three-dimensional molecular scaffold chiefly responsible for cartilage's mechanical strength, resilience, and biological activity. It consists of a dense network of *type II collagen*, *aggrecan*, *chondroitin sulfate*, *hyaluronic acid*, and other minor collagens and proteins[1][4][5]. The ECM interacts closely with chondrocytes and stem cells, regulating their fate through both biochemical cues (e.g., growth factors, integrin binding) and biomechanical properties (e.g., stiffness, topography). ECM breakdown is central to conditions such as osteoarthritis, and its restoration is a key therapeutic goal in cartilage regeneration[3][6]. Modern approaches leverage decellularized ECM scaffolds, growth factor supplementation, and nanomaterials to promote ECM regeneration and functional cartilage repair.
