Overview

Articular chondrocytes are the specialized cells found exclusively within articular cartilage, a type of hyaline cartilage that covers the surfaces of bones in synovial joints. They are responsible for producing and maintaining the extracellular matrix (ECM) of articular cartilage, which is primarily composed of water, collagen (mainly type II), proteoglycans, and glycoproteins. Chondrocytes play a critical role in sustaining joint function by ensuring the structural integrity and biomechanical properties of cartilage. Damage or loss leads to impaired joint function; limited regenerative capacity makes preservation crucial. Dysfunction is implicated in osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint diseases due to imbalance between synthesis/degradation activities.
