Articular chondrocyte transplantation, most commonly referred to as autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), is a cell-based therapy designed to repair focal defects in articular cartilage, particularly in the knee. It is a surgical and cellular procedure involving the transplantation of cultured chondrocytes (cartilage-producing cells) into damaged joint areas. The goal is to restore hyaline-like cartilage that closely resembles native joint tissue and improve function while reducing pain.
