Articular tissue degradation (free radical-mediated) refers to the breakdown of joint tissues—primarily articular cartilage, but also including synovium and subchondral bone—driven by oxidative stress from free radicals such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). This process is central to the pathogenesis of degenerative joint diseases like osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), where an imbalance between free radical production and antioxidant defenses leads to progressive tissue damage.
