Overview

Asc-type amino acid transporter 1 (Asc-1/SLC7A10) is a sodium-independent, small neutral amino acid transporter that functions as a heterodimeric complex with the heavy chain protein 4F2hc (SLC3A2). It is essential for the bidirectional transport of substrates such as D-serine, L-serine, glycine, and alanine, particularly in the central nervous system, where its activity determines the levels of glycine and D-serine, both critical for NMDA receptor function and neurological health. Loss of Asc-1 impairs neural homeostasis, leading to severe motor and developmental deficits. Although currently not widely targeted clinically, Asc-1 is under investigation as a potential therapeutic target and molecular imaging/probe tool for neurological diseases, owing to its central role in amino acid signaling and neurotransmission[4][5][8].
