The catalytic chain (PyrB) of Aspartate carbamoyltransferase (ATCase) catalyzes the first committed step in pyrimidine biosynthesis: the condensation of L-aspartate and carbamoyl phosphate to form N-carbamoyl-L-aspartate and inorganic phosphate. It is regulated allosterically by ATP and CTP. The holoenzyme consists of six catalytic chains organized as two trimers, along with six regulatory chains organized as three dimers.
