Overview

Aspergillus fumigatus antigens represent a heterogeneous group of molecules, including cell wall polysaccharides and secreted proteins, that are critical to the lifecycle and pathogenicity of the fungus. Major structural antigens such as galactomannan and (1→3)-β-D-glucan are essential for maintaining fungal cell wall integrity and serve as the primary biomarkers for the clinical diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (Maertens et al., 2005; Odabasi et al., 2004). Secreted proteins like Asp f 1 (a ribotoxin) and Asp f 3 (a peroxiredoxin) are potent allergens and virulence factors that facilitate tissue invasion and host immune modulation (Latgé & Steinbach, 2009). These antigens are primary targets for the development of diagnostic assays, monoclonal antibodies, and vaccine candidates designed to neutralize fungal toxins or promote immune-mediated clearance. In allergic manifestations like ABPA, these antigens trigger significant IgE-mediated inflammatory responses, making them indirect targets for biological therapies that modulate the host immune environment (Cassanova-Cardoso et al., 2020).
