An astringent agent is a chemical substance that induces the contraction or shrinkage of body tissues, typically when applied topically to the skin or mucous membranes. This effect is achieved through a non-specific biochemical process where the agent causes the precipitation of proteins on the surface of the tissue, creating a protective layer and reducing fluid discharge. Astringents are not specific molecular targets like receptors or enzymes; rather, they represent a broad pharmacological class that includes metal salts like aluminum or zinc, and organic compounds like tannins found in witch hazel.
