Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated kinase (ATM)

Target
ATM
Molecular classification
Serine/threonine protein kinase, PIKK family member
01

Overview

ATM is a large serine/threonine protein kinase that plays a central role in the cellular response to DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) and other forms of cellular stress. It acts as a key initiator and coordinator of DNA damage signaling, cell cycle checkpoints, DNA repair, and apoptosis. Mutations in the ATM gene cause ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cerebellar degeneration/ataxia, immune deficiency, radiosensitivity, and high cancer predisposition. ATM also regulates immune functions, such as repressing IL‑23 secretion in dendritic cells.
