Overview

Ataxin 2-like pseudogene (ENSG00000224280, also known as LOC317727) is a genomic sequence that closely resembles the protein-coding Ataxin-2-like (ATXN2L) gene but does not encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and lack the regulatory or coding capacity required for protein production. This pseudogene does not have an established biological function, is not associated with any human disease, and is not considered a therapeutic target. The functional ATXN2L gene (distinct from this pseudogene) participates in RNA metabolism and stress granule regulation[4]. However, ENSG00000224280 itself is non-functional and should not be confused with ATXN2L[1].
