Overview

The ataxin-3 pseudogene (ENSG00000258639, LOC100418768) is a DNA sequence in the human genome similar to the functional ataxin-3 gene (ATXN3). Pseudogenes like this arise through duplication or retrotransposition but accumulate mutations that prevent production of a functional protein. While most pseudogenes are considered nonfunctional, some show low-level, tissue-specific transcription and can produce non-coding RNAs that modulate gene expression, possibly acting as endogenous RNA competitors or participating in chromatin regulation. However, this locus is not considered a drug target, has no known interacting drugs, and is not associated directly with any disease or therapeutic safety concerns.
