ATP-binding cassette sub-family A member 6 (ABCA6) is a membrane-associated transporter protein and a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily[5][6]. ABC transporters utilize ATP hydrolysis to translocate various substrates, primarily lipids, across cellular membranes[1][3]. ABCA6 belongs to the ABC1 subfamily, which is uniquely found in multicellular eukaryotes and may play a role in macrophage lipid homeostasis[5][6]. The gene is clustered with other ABC1 subfamily members on chromosome 17q24. While the specific physiological roles of ABCA6 remain incompletely understood, it is upregulated in some physiological settings and has been detected in certain cancer tissues[2][4]. Like other ABC transporters, alterations or variants in ABCA6 may contribute to broader disease phenotypes, especially related to lipid metabolism and transport[3][5][6].
