ATP-binding cassette sub-family B member 6 (ABCB6)

Target
ABCB6
Molecular classification
Transporter, ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family, Half-transporter, Membrane protein
01

Overview

ATP-binding cassette sub-family B member 6 (ABCB6) is a membrane transporter protein that belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter family, functioning primarily as a homodimeric "half-transporter." It is localized to cellular organelles such as mitochondria and the plasma membrane and plays a crucial role in the translocation of porphyrins and related molecules, making it essential for heme biosynthesis. ABCB6 is also responsible for exporting xenobiotics and toxic metals, contributing to cellular resistance against drugs and environmental toxins. Genetically, ABCB6 encodes the carrier for the Langereis (Lan) blood group antigen, which impacts transfusion compatibility. Its expression levels have been associated with drug resistance in cancer, and mutations or deficiencies may alter pharmacokinetics or risk severe transfusion reactions while generally not causing baseline clinical symptoms in healthy individuals.
