Overview

ATP-binding cassette sub-family C member 11 (ABCC11) is an ATP-dependent membrane transporter belonging to the multidrug resistance-associated protein (MRP) subfamily of the large ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABCC11 actively effluxes a broad range of lipophilic anions—including cyclic nucleotides, steroid sulfates, bile acid conjugates, and xenobiotics—across cellular membranes. It plays key physiological roles in bile acid and steroid transport, and is uniquely associated with human phenotypes such as earwax type (wet or dry) and axillary odor due to its involvement in secretion from apocrine glands. In tissues such as the brain, ABCC11 facilitates neurosteroid release. Clinically, it can mediate chemoresistance by extruding nucleoside-based antineoplastic agents (such as 5-fluorouracil and methotrexate), making it a relevant pharmacological target for modulating drug disposition and efficacy. A common polymorphism (538G>A) in the gene impacts both visible traits (earwax, body odor) and potentially clinical drug responses.
