It is widely expressed in various tissues, including the brain, heart, and kidneys, where it plays a crucial role in the transport of cyclic nucleotides like cGMP and cAMP, thereby regulating intracellular signaling pathways (PubMed: 10751356). In the context of oncology, ABCC5 is significant for its ability to export several chemotherapeutic agents, particularly nucleoside analogs such as 5-fluorouracil and 6-mercaptopurine, contributing to multidrug resistance (MDR) (PubMed: 12538899). Beyond cancer, ABCC5 has been implicated in cardiovascular health and metabolic processes due to its regulation of cyclic nucleotide levels (PubMed: 15145511).
