Overview

ATP-binding cassette sub-family F member 2 (ABCF2) is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily, most closely associated with the GCN20 subfamily[1][3][6]. Unlike typical ABC transporters, ABCF2 lacks transmembrane domains, suggesting it does not function as a classical membrane transporter[5]. It is involved in a variety of cellular processes including the regulation of cellular volume (by inhibiting outwardly rectifying Cl channels), modulation of translation, and conferring resistance to chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin and sunitinib in certain cancer types. ABCF2’s expression is cytoplasmic and is most prominent in various epithelial tumors, where its high levels correlate with chemoresistance and poor prognosis. It is also under investigation as a prognostic biomarker in gynecologic cancers, particularly ovarian clear cell carcinoma and cervical cancer[3][5]. There is some evidence linking ABCF2 to neurological conditions and interstitial cystitis, although its mechanistic role in non-cancer diseases remains less defined[7].
