ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member 1 (ABCG1) is a membrane-associated, half-transporter protein primarily responsible for exporting cholesterol and phospholipids from cells to extracellular acceptors like high-density lipoproteins (HDL) through ATP hydrolysis[1][3][5]. Essential for macrophage cholesterol efflux, ABCG1 is also involved in regulating cellular lipid levels and preventing cytotoxic lipid accumulation[1][5]. It acts predominantly as a homodimer and can form heterodimers with related transporters, such as ABCG4[3].
