The ATP-sensitive inward rectifier potassium channel (KATP channel) is a potassium ion channel that links cellular metabolism to electrical activity. It is composed of Kir6.x and SUR subunits, gated by intracellular ATP/ADP levels, and plays a crucial role in regulating membrane potential and various physiological processes in tissues like the heart, pancreas, brain, and smooth muscle. Mutations and dysfunctions are associated with diseases such as neonatal diabetes and cardiac arrhythmias.
