ATP-sensitive inward rectifier potassium channel 8 (Kir6.1) is a subunit of the ATP-sensitive potassium (K_ATP) channel. K_ATP channels link cellular metabolism to electrical activity by responding to intracellular ATP and ADP levels. These channels are hetero-octameric complexes composed of four Kir6.x subunits (like Kir6.1) and four regulatory SUR subunits. They are crucial in various tissues like heart, vasculature, skeletal muscle, and brain, regulating potassium ion flow, stabilizing resting membrane potential, and protecting against metabolic stress.
