ATP synthase is a large mitochondrial enzyme complex responsible for ATP production through oxidative phosphorylation, comprising multiple subunits grouped into the F1 (catalytic) and Fo (membrane proton channel) domains. However, the pseudogene version does not encode a functional protein, having accumulated disabling mutations or resulting from genomic duplication or retrotransposition. Pseudogenes like this may be transcribed in some contexts, but they do not produce a protein product and are not pursued as drug targets. No evidence currently supports a role for this pseudogene in disease or as a biomarker.
