The mitochondrially encoded ATP synthase 6 pseudogene is a non-functional DNA sequence in the human genome that closely resembles the mitochondrial ATP synthase 6 gene but does not produce a functional protein. Such pseudogenes often arise through gene duplication or retrotransposition, retain homology with their ancestral gene, and may sometimes be transcribed into non-coding RNA but do not contribute directly to mitochondrial ATP production or known cellular metabolic functions[2][4][6]. Pseudogenes can complicate genetic studies due to sequence similarity with functional genes and may rarely have regulatory effects, but most are considered genomic "junk" with no direct role in cellular physiology[4][6].
