ATP synthase F1 subunit alpha pseudogene 4 (ATP5F1AP4) is a pseudogene related to ATP synthase, a key mitochondrial enzyme complex involved in ATP production through oxidative phosphorylation. Pseudogenes such as ATP5F1AP4 are non-functional copies or remnants of genes and do not contribute to protein function or serve as drug targets. The functional gene in this family is ATP5F1A, which encodes the alpha subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase catalytic core responsible for ATP generation. Multiple pseudogenes, including ATP5F1AP4, exist for ATP5F1A but these do not encode active proteins or have direct biological functions. Pseudogenes are generally not considered therapeutic targets unless they are implicated in regulatory mechanisms or diseases, which is not the case for ATP5F1AP4.
