ATP synthase membrane subunit c locus 1 pseudogene 5 (ATP5MC1P5) is a member of the pseudogene subfamily related to the ATP synthase subunit c genes, which code for structural components of the mitochondrial ATP synthase complex (complex V) in oxidative phosphorylation. While its ancestral gene products are essential for ATP production in mitochondria, this pseudogene does not encode a functional protein and is not considered a relevant therapeutic or diagnostic target. The human genome contains numerous pseudogenes of the ATP synthase subunit c family, thought to have arisen by gene duplication events. ATP5MC1P5 is not involved in encoding an active subunit, in mitochondrial function, or in any known disease processes.
