Overview

ATP synthase mitochondrial F1 complex assembly factor 1 (ATPAF1) is a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein required for the assembly of the F1 catalytic portion of mitochondrial ATP synthase. ATPAF1 specifically interacts with the F1 beta subunit, preventing its nonproductive aggregation and enabling correct assembly of the ATP synthase complex. This factor is essential for proper mitochondrial ATP production but is not itself an enzyme, receptor, or transporter. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants exist; however, the biological significance of some is unclear. No evidence identifies ATPAF1 as a direct drug target, disease biomarker, or therapeutic agent[1].
