ATP synthase peripheral stalk subunit d pseudogene 3 (ATP5PDP3) is a human pseudogene corresponding to the gene for the d subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase peripheral stalk. The functional gene, ATP5PD, encodes the protein subunit d which is involved in the stator—structural support for the mitochondrial ATP synthase complex, necessary for ATP production during oxidative phosphorylation. However, as a pseudogene, ATP5PDP3 does not code for a functional protein and is not involved in any known biological functions or recognized as a therapeutic target. No drugs interact directly with pseudogenes, and ATP5PDP3 has no established role as a disease biomarker or safety concern. ATP5PDP3 is one of several pseudogenes related to the ATP5PD gene, which has three such pseudogenes mapped to chromosomes 9, 12, and 15. Its sequence is similar to, but distinct from, the active ATP5PD gene responsible for encoding the actual subunit d of mitochondrial ATP synthase. Pseudogenes like ATP5PDP3 may occasionally participate in gene regulation at the RNA level, but there is no current evidence that ATP5PDP3 has such a function. Key clarification: ATP5PDP3 is not a valid therapeutic target because it is a non-coding pseudogene—it should not be listed as a potential druggable or functional target in research or drug development data models.
