ATP2A1 antisense RNA 1 (ATP2A1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene transcribed in an antisense orientation to the ATP2A1 gene, which encodes the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 1 (SERCA1)[1][2]. As an antisense transcript, ATP2A1-AS1 likely plays a role in the regulation of ATP2A1 gene expression, potentially affecting muscle calcium handling by modulating the stability or processing of ATP2A1 mRNA[2][3][6][9]. Antisense RNAs such as ATP2A1-AS1 are increasingly recognized for their regulatory functions in gene expression, including chromatin modification, transcriptional interference, and mRNA stability, but ATP2A1-AS1 itself is not a protein nor an established direct therapeutic target[1][2][3][6]. Its functional significance is principally inferred from its relationship to ATP2A1, and disruption or abnormal regulation of this antisense transcript could potentially contribute to disease phenotypes related to muscle function, such as Brody disease[1][2]. There are no known drugs or biomarker applications specifically targeting ATP2A1-AS1.
