ATP5MC2 pseudogene 4 (ATP5MC2P4) is a pseudogene related to the ATP5MC2 gene, which encodes a subunit of the mitochondrial ATP synthase complex. Pseudogenes such as ATP5MC2P4 do not produce a functional protein product and do not have a direct biological function. ATP5MC2 is involved in the mitochondrial production of ATP during oxidative phosphorylation, but ATP5MC2P4 is a non-coding genomic element derived from duplication or retrotransposition events. There is no evidence that ATP5MC2P4 functions as a therapeutic target, encodes a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, or is directly involved in disease or drug interactions. The term "pseudogene" designates a gene sequence similar to a known gene but incapable of producing a functional protein, commonly due to disabling mutations or regulatory sequence changes.
