Atrazine is a synthetic herbicide of the triazine class widely used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds, particularly in corn and sugarcane crops. Its mechanism of action is specific to plants, where it inhibits photosystem II by binding to the plastoquinone-binding protein, disrupting electron transport and causing plant death. Atrazine is environmentally persistent, can be transported far from application sites, and is considered a potential endocrine disruptor.
