Overview

Atrazine is a synthetic herbicide of the triazine class widely used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds, particularly in corn and sugarcane crops. Its mechanism of action is specific to plants, where it inhibits photosystem II by binding to the plastoquinone-binding protein, disrupting electron transport and causing plant death. Atrazine is environmentally persistent, can be transported far from application sites, and is considered a potential endocrine disruptor. It is not a biological target such as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or typical therapeutic target; instead, it is itself a small-molecule chemical entity used as a pesticide. Atrazine is regulated due to its toxicity and environmental risks, but it is not a molecular target for drugs in pharmacology[1][3][4][5][6].
