The atrioventricular (AV) node is a specialized structure within the heart's electrical conduction system. It serves as the critical electrical connection between the atria and ventricles, ensuring coordinated contraction of these chambers for effective blood flow. The AV node delays the transmission of electrical impulses from the sinoatrial (SA) node to allow complete atrial contraction before ventricular activation. The autonomic nervous system modulates AV nodal conduction: Sympathetic stimulation increases conduction velocity, while parasympathetic stimulation decreases it. Disorders affecting AV nodal function include various degrees of heart block.
