Overview

ATXN7 antisense RNA 1 (SCAANT1), also known as ATXN7-AS1, is a long noncoding RNA gene transcribed in antisense orientation to the ATXN7 gene. SCAANT1 does not code for a protein but may play a role in post-transcriptional or epigenetic regulation of ATXN7, contributing to the pathogenesis of spinocerebellar ataxia type 7, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by CAG-repeat expansion in ATXN7. Although the protein product of ATXN7 is a direct therapeutic target, SCAANT1 itself is not currently considered a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs targeting it directly. Its biological function and disease relevance appear to be linked primarily to its regulatory effects on ATXN7 expression and, as such, it belongs in the molecular classification of noncoding RNAs. There are no known clinical biomarkers, safety concerns, or approved drugs interacting directly with SCAANT1.
