Overview

The AType-1 angiotensin II receptor (AT1) is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that plays a central role in the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS). It is the primary receptor mediating the effects of angiotensin II, including vasoconstriction, aldosterone release, and cardiac hypertrophy. It is a major target for drugs used to treat hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.

Mechanism of action

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) antagonize selective facets of AT₁R function depending on their pharmacological properties. They block the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, thereby inhibiting its downstream effects.
