Audio visual stimulation (AVS), also known as audio visual entrainment (AVE), is a neuromodulation technique that uses pulses of light and sound at specific frequencies to influence brainwave activity and produce various cognitive and physiological effects. The stimuli are delivered using specialized devices (e.g., goggles or headphones) that generate flashing lights and rhythmic sounds, guiding the brain into target brainwave states (alpha, theta, delta, or beta) via entrainment. This technique is used non-invasively to reduce stress, improve sleep, boost cognitive and athletic performance, and manage symptoms of various psychiatric, neurological, and pain disorders. While it is not a classical molecular or receptor target, the method relies on the brain's capacity for frequency-following responses and neuroplasticity. Clinical studies demonstrate potential benefits for insomnia, ADHD, anxiety, depression, migraine, chronic pain, and more, although mechanisms remain incompletely understood and further research is needed on efficacy and best practices.

Alters thalamocortical network dynamics by activating neural pathways from retina and cochlea to thalamus and cortex, changing brain network states
