Auditory processing

01

Overview

Auditory processing refers to a biological function and neurological process. It is the integrated activity of multiple neural structures and molecular components working together to convert sound vibrations into perception and cognition. This process involves various molecular components such as ion channels (e.g., TMC1), neurotransmitter receptors, transcription factors (e.g., Neurog1, Atoh1, Pax6), and signaling molecules, as well as anatomical structures including the cochlea, spiral ganglion neurons, cochlear nuclei, superior olivary complex, inferior colliculus, medial geniculate body, and auditory cortex. Its functions include signal transduction from mechanical vibrations to electrical signals, frequency encoding, binaural hearing, sound localization, and complex auditory perception. It is not a single molecule or protein that can be therapeutically targeted, but rather a complex system.
