Aureolysin

Molecular classification
Metalloproteinase, Metallopeptidase, Enzyme
01

Overview

Aureolysin is an extracellular zinc-dependent metalloproteinase produced by Staphylococcus aureus. It is a major virulence factor contributing to immune evasion and infection persistence by inhibiting complement-mediated phagocytosis, degrading antimicrobial peptides and complement proteins, and inactivating serpin-type serine peptidase inhibitors. Its role in infection dynamics includes facilitating the transition from biofilm-forming to invasive phenotypes. Due to its central role in immune evasion, it is a promising drug target for anti-infective development.
