Autoantibodies on the ocular surface are immunoglobulins produced by the immune system that bind to self-antigens expressed in ocular surface tissues, including the cornea, conjunctiva, and associated glands. These autoantibodies are hallmarks of several autoimmune conditions, most notably Sjögren’s syndrome and dry eye disease. Their pathogenic roles include triggering complement activation, recruiting inflammatory cells, and directly damaging ocular surface cells, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue dysfunction[1][2]. Commonly implicated autoantibodies include anti-Ro/SSA, anti-La/SSB, and other markers, and they may serve as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. However, "autoantibodies on the ocular surface" is a descriptive term for a group of molecules rather than a specific validated therapeutic target.
