Overview

Autoimmune biomarkers are a broad category of measurable biological indicators used to identify, characterize, and monitor autoimmune diseases (Wang et al., 2016). These markers typically include autoantibodies, cytokines, and specific genetic sequences that reflect the underlying pathophysiology of immune system dysregulation and loss of self-tolerance (Nature Reviews Rheumatology, 2017). In clinical practice, they are vital for the early diagnosis of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, as well as for predicting disease progression and treatment response (FDA-NIH Biomarker Working Group, 2016). Because this term describes a functional group of molecules rather than a single protein or receptor, it does not constitute a specific therapeutic target. Instead, it serves as a framework for patient stratification and precision medicine in the management of chronic inflammatory disorders. Common examples include antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and rheumatoid factor (RF), which assist in differentiating between various autoimmune phenotypes (Mayo Clinic, 2023). The development of novel biomarkers remains a priority in drug development to improve the success rates of clinical trials by identifying the most responsive patient subsets.
