Autologous chondrocytes are cartilage-producing cells (chondrocytes) harvested from a patient’s own body and used in regenerative procedures, most notably autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), to repair articular cartilage defects. The term "autologous" indicates that the cells originate from the same individual who will receive them, eliminating risks of immune rejection. They synthesize and maintain the extracellular matrix (ECM) of cartilage, which is rich in collagen type II, aggrecan, and other proteoglycans.
Cells are implanted to regenerate damaged cartilage tissue by producing new extracellular matrix.
