Autologous tumor proteins are the collection of proteins expressed by a patient's own tumor cells. These proteins include mutated, overexpressed, or otherwise abnormal proteins unique to each patient's cancer. Since many of these proteins are not found in normal tissues, they can serve as targets for the immune system and are harnessed for personalized immunotherapies such as autologous tumor cell vaccines. In these therapies, tumor cells or tumor protein extracts are used to stimulate the patient's immune system to recognize and attack their tumor. This approach takes advantage of the entire spectrum of tumor-specific and tumor-associated antigens but is technically challenging due to the heterogeneity and uniqueness of each patient's tumor protein repertoire[9][10].
