Overview

The autonomic nervous system functions refer to the ensemble of involuntary, unconscious regulatory processes controlled by the ANS, including but not limited to heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, digestion, pupillary response, urination, and sexual arousal[1][4][7][10]. The ANS mediates these functions through its sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric branches, relying primarily on neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine and norepinephrine to exert effects via a broad and diverse array of receptor types[3][5]. "Autonomic nervous system functions" does not denote a single anatomical or molecular entity, but the aggregate output of a distributed neural control system. Thus, it is not appropriate as a structured therapeutic target.
